Many retail managers are promoted because they’re reliable, knowledgeable and great with customers. Then suddenly they’re expected to delegate, hold people accountable, handle conflict, coach struggling employees, make business decisions and keep an entire shift running smoothly.

The Better Leader Project was built to teach those skills.

Created by The Pet Shop Girls , two independent pet store owners with more than 30 years of combined industry experience, this practical leadership program is designed for retail owners, managers, supervisors and emerging leaders who want to build stronger teams and become more confident leaders.

This isn’t leadership theory. It’s practical training built around situations managers face every day.

Inside the course, you’ll learn how to:

Every module includes an interactive workbook designed to turn what you’ve learned into action. You’ll work through exercises, scenarios and guided activities that help you apply the concepts directly to your own leadership style, team and business.

Instead of finishing a lesson thinking, That was a great idea, you’ll finish with something you can actually use.

You’ll build clearer expectations, work through real leadership situations, examine how you currently manage your team and create practical tools and processes you can bring back to the floor.

The course also tackles one of the biggest challenges in independent retail: building a team that doesn’t need the owner to solve every problem.

You’ll learn how to develop employee judgment, create real accountability and give managers enough authority to take ownership of the outcomes they’re responsible for. The program walks owners and managers through creating a Manager Authority Map that establishes which decisions managers own, which they can make and report afterward and which still require owner approval.

Throughout the program, practical frameworks give you repeatable ways to handle situations that can otherwise feel uncomfortable or overwhelming. Instead of guessing your way through a performance conversation or reacting emotionally when something goes wrong, you’ll have a process to follow.

The goal isn’t to create managers who simply keep everyone busy. It’s to develop leaders who can think, communicate, make sound decisions, protect your standards and help move the business forward.
